Helpful Resources for Low Carb Living

The "How-To" for Low Carb Living

This is my favorite Low Carb "How To" Book.  It explains Induction, On-going weight Loss and Other Phases, that honestly, I have never paid attention to.  I believe the 1st 2 phases of Atkins are essential to ridding your body of carb cravings and learning to fuel it with food that is good for you and that helps keep you full.

Other People believe in The South Beach Diet and for anyone interested, here is a link to it at Amazon.  The South Beach Diet - The Delicious, Doctor-designed, Foolproof Plan For Fast And Healthy Weight Loss

For myself, there is only one sure-fire kick start and Atkins is it.  I love the "nuts and bolts" why it works, what to eat, what to avoid.  I'm not so sure that I ever really used any of the recipes in the book though.  I am a "real food" kind of cook.  But I will get to that in a bit.

My top picks website (or web group) for learning Low Carb:
Low Carb Eating  I head straight to the forum and I read, read, read.  The people here absolutely know Low Carb inside and out.  They have tested sugar alternatives and low carb pastas.  They have tested themselves and reported their results.  They have opinions of supplementing.  You may have to dig around a bit to find what you are looking for, but I'd be somewhat shocked if they do not have answers here!

Low Carb Friends Another forum that I have frequented.  In addition to group support in low carb living, they also have great links to finding low carb food online.  While I have never purchased any food online, I do think it's interesting to see what's available out there in cyber land if you can't find it locally.

Spark People The site itself does not promote low carb dieting.  But, if you simply want a place to track your nutrition including carbs, protein and fiber (all of which are an important part of low carb) this is a good site.  There are also low-carb teams that support each other.  I for some reason, do not find the team thing very user friendly, so the jury is still out on this site.

Fat Secret Is a nutrition tracking site that I recently joined.  So far I like it.  When you sign up, it lets you choose which diet plan you are following.  Then I have found it easy to find some of my common low carb foods already there, which makes tracking so much easier.  It's a pain in the butt to have to input all the nutrition info for a particular food you ate today!

Cooking Low Carb

Linda's Low Carb Before I had a low carb cookbook, this is a site that I went back to several times.  This lady makes low carb dishes and then rates them.  I found her results to be similar to my opinions, so this is definitely worth checking out!

My top pick cookbook for Low Carbing:  Anything Dana Carpender.  I'm putting links to two of her books, 1 that I have and the other I ordered today.

When I first received the 15 minute recipe book, I fell in love with Low Carb all over again.  These are "real food" recipes that anyone would love.  I love how quickly the recipes come together.  This was a huge help

to me as I was mainly cooking a meal for myself and then something separate for the family.  The boys are all getting bigger and thankfully, more willing to try new foods and now it is rare that I cook a separate dish for myself.  I hope they will be as excited to try new dishes from the 500 recipe book as I am!

As I cooked from the 1st books, I was very careful to make notes in the book for each recipe I tried.  If we liked it, I added it to my menu list that I refer to when menu planning.  If I/we didn't like it I made notes on that as well.

*As you can see I have added affiliate links to these books at Amazon, but really you know you can buy them anywhere.  I just happened to order the most recent book from there and it's a quick way for my to link to you the exact books and let you get a peek at them. I'm a big believer in buying used books and many, many of the books in my home were picked up at Goodwill, yard sales, etc.  None of the books I listed here today have I found that way.  My first Arkins book was purchased at Wal Mart and first Dana Carpender book was purchased, I think, at Books A Million on an impulse.

EXERCISE

Why, why, why must I have to exercise?  It stinks, it really, really bites, but it has to be!  Last year I tried Couch to 5k and I think I would have liked it if I had stayed with it.  But, I didn't.  I think I got 2 weeks in??

Zumba OK, so everyone in the world (or in my world) is doing Zumba.  I hear that it is a lot of fun.  I know people cannot quit talking about it.  I couldn't find time to join between my day job and my night job.  I recently quit the night job, so I don't have an excuse now.  Except, that I am currently trying out different workouts at home.  It is AMAZING at what great workouts you can find on your television with just an Internet connection!  But that is for another time!

Walking and playing with the kids.  So I don't have a link for this, but you don't need one!  Three days this week, I have been walking up and down the street and across multiple blocks while the kids ride their bikes.  I'm just not the kind of Mom who lets them ride alone, so I either turn them into couch potatoes, or I get outside with them.  Baseball season is quickly approaching and they really need the practice, so I guess I will be doing that soon.  If they let me that is.  I distinctly remember them telling me last year that I'm not a very good person to help them with their baseball.  I can't hit the ball. I can't throw the ball (accurately) and I can't catch a ball (I probably could if I would quit covering my head with my arms) Yeah, I am scared of a baseball.  Maybe this year will be different!
