Low Carb Products I Love

My current Whim or obsession is Low Carb Living.  It’s an on-going thing, but all I seem to want to write about recently.  Here are some products that help me live a low carb lifestyle.

joseph's pita bread

This is honestly one of my favorite products in the world.  With only 60 calories in one pita, 8g carbs, 4g fiber, you get a net carb count of 4g in one pita.  I eat 1/2 of one three or 4 times per week.  Such a great alternative to bread!  Unlike the low carb tortillas I have tried, these also make wonderful chips.  Super yum! I make the chips as a rare treat that satisfies the need for a salty, crunchy snack.

See this basket of veggies?  An absolute must for maintaining a low carb diet, and really for any diet I guess, is an abundance of vegetables.  I’m currently crazy about cauliflower.  Cabbage, cauliflower, and zucchini are more than what appears at first glance.  I have found them to be very versatile and here is a thought that might not occur to the low carb naysayer:  When incorporated into a dish as an alternative to rice, noodles or potatoes, they help to stretch a small amount of meat.  Who in the world could negate the advantages of omitting starches, using less meat and increasing vegetable consumption?  Even people who lose weight on a “Low Carb diet” miss this key component to the diet.  No one can indefinitely exist on bacon, eggs, green beans, steak and chicken.  It’s fun in the beginning and it works.  But, you (I) have to, for long term health and success have to be looking for balance.

gelatin

Sugar free gelatin.  I hated Jell-O all my life.  Until I began a low carb diet several years ago.  Now if I get a very rare sweet craving this does the trick.  I keep it made up in the fridge all the time.  The children love it and it’s there if I need it.  A little dollop of whipped cream on top and I’m good to go.  I hesitate slightly in recommending it for everyone because I’ve read of so many people who go to great lengths to procure the perfect “alternative” recipe for low carb desserts.  I’m not one of those people.  I do not crave sweets unless I am eating an abundance of carbs.  I suspect, but cannot confirm that some of those referred to persons, are doing themselves a dis-service by putting so many sweet into their body.  I believe it triggers more cravings.  But then, I do drink a lot of coffee, with a lot of sugar free sugar alternative creamer, so maybe I’m keeping my cravings at bay with that.  My opinion on that is a little fuzzy.

Until next time,
